Ons Jabeur just can’t do it in the final. The Tunisian lost yet another Wimbledon final. Beaten two sets to nil by Czech Marketa Vondrousova (6-4,6-4).
A tense final in which both players, under stress, struggled to break free. And Ons Jabeur had plenty to regret. She let the first set slip away after starting the match well. The Tunisian even led 4-2, but struggled to confirm her lead. Very solid, the Czech took advantage of Jabeur’s erratic serve. The 42nd-ranked player in the world came back on level terms and broke Africa’s best player (5-4).Unperturbed, she held her serve to win the first set (6-4). Ons Jabeur ended the first set with 13 unforced errors.
At the start of the 2nd set, Jabeur gave herself a fright by losing her serve. But the Czech couldn’t confirm the break and the Tunisian came back to 1-1. She breaks her opponent at 3-1, but still misses the chance to consolidate her lead. Tense, lackadaisical on her backhand and with more than 14 unforced errors, Ons Jabeur breaks again in the money time. And Vondrousova didn’t miss a beat. The 24-year-old serves for the match and wins. She thus becomes the first non-seeded player to win Wimbledon. Devastated Ons Jabeur doesn’t let it get her down. She promises to come back even stronger.
