Football – Women’s World Cup 2023: African selections wake up

It’s already over for Zambia.Beaten for a second time, the Cooper Queens will not see the Round of 8 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. However, at the end of Matchday 2, Morocco, South Africa and Nigeria still have every chance of qualifying.

After a particularly difficult first day, with three defeats and a single draw for the four African representatives at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Day 2 was much more satisfying.

Morocco recorded their first success at a Women’s World Cup by beating South Korea 1-0, following their heavy 6-0 opening defeat by Germany. The Moroccans are now back in control of their own destiny. If they beat Colombia in their next match, they could qualify for the next round.

Nigeria also hold all their cards. After holding Canada to a 0-0 draw, the Nigerians dominated Australia 3-2 in a breathtaking match. The Super Falcons currently lead their group before facing Ireland on the final day.

South Africa (1 pt), on their part, did not win but can still keep their hopes alive. Banyana Banyana drew 2-2 with Argentina after losing to Sweden. On the final day, they face Italy, second in the group with 3 points. A win should see them through to the next round. For Zambia, on the other hand, the adventure is unfortunately already over. The Cooper Queens fell heavily again to Spain (5-0). That makes two “manitas” in two outings after the one against Japan. Against Costa Rica on the final day, it will only be a matter of saving their honour and going home with at least a point in the bag.
